Call to Artists
Library Sculpture: A unique piece of art that reflects the values of a free public library and stands as an icon to welcome all patrons.
Application Deadline: September 30, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.
Budget: $40,000
PROJECT BACKGROUND
A circular planter measuring 15-foot in diameter sits at the entry for the Library on the east side of the building. (See Site Schematic and pictures below) An ornate fountain was originally planned for this location, but was deleted due to other project expenses. Recently, a partnership of the Art In Public Places Committee, the Friends of the Shasta County Libraries in Redding and the Citizens Library Advisory Committee came together to fund this request for proposal. The partners seek a unique piece of art that reflects the values of a free public library and stands as an icon to welcome all patrons. The sculpture will fit within the footprint and replace the landscaping in the planter.
The Redding Library, located at 1100 Parkview Avenue, opened to the public on March 3, 2007. The brand new 55,000SF state-of-the-art facility is the culmination of the work of many people over many years.
Redding is truly a miracle library that has returned from closure of the entire system in the 1980's, minimal operating hours in the 1990's, to a new facility today: reborn and inspired to serve a community seeking learning, literacy, and leisure reading. Almost 20,000 hours of service were donated by a committed corps of library volunteers during the first year of operations. The library is the centerpiece of educational and cultural energy in the community with more than 50,000 visits monthly, 1,000 new library cards issued each month, and meeting rooms booked full. www.shastalibraries.org
The Redding Library is part of the City Hall campus, which includes a 2.5-acre sculpture park.

Art in Public Places
The City of Redding is seeking artists to display their artwork at City Hall during 2009. Eighteen artists, group of artists or schools will be chosen to produce original works of art.
Selections for this Call are made by a panel consisting of the City's Art in Public Places Committee and members of City staff. The Redding Civic Center spans three stories, is approximately 100,000 square feet and hosts over 500 feet of gallery railing. Since the program's inception we have exhibited over 1700 pieces of artwork from more than 140 artists and many pieces have been sold. The City collects no commission on the sale of exhibited art.
The artwork on display at City Hall has been carefully selected by the Art in Public Places Committee to provide an engaging experience. New exhibits are typically hung in February, June and October, although this schedule is subject to change for special showings.
