Swim Lesson Descriptions
The following class descriptions will help you to determine which class level is best suited for your swimmer. Click Here for times and session dates. Call 225-4095 to register now for Redding Recreation's American Red Cross swim lessons. Traditional two week sessions are available Monday through Thursday. All levels will practice lifejacket safety in the water.
TopParent & child
Teacher to Student Ratio: 1 to 10. An adult MUST accompany the child in the water for all classes.
Guppies
Ages 6-18 months
Infants must be able to hold their head up. Emphasis is on water adjustment, swimming readiness skills, and fun in the water with other little ones along with instruction for adults on appropriate infant in-water holding techniques. Adult must be with infant at all times.
Minnows
Beginning Parent & Me
For the preschooler who has reservations in and around the water. Emphasis is on water adjustment, swimming readiness skills, and enjoyment of the water through individual and group instruction.
*Preschool equivalent: Gold Fish
Rainbow Fish
Intermediate Parent & Me
For beginners who love the water but still need the confidence of being with a loved one. Emphasis is on independent water exploration, floating, kicking, gliding and arm movement.
*Preschool equivalent: Blue Gill
TopPreschool
3 -5 years & have not attended Kindergarten. Teacher to Student Ratio: 1 to 5. Students only; adults may observe students in the water from pool deck only. If your child needs additional support from a loved one, please see Parent & Child above.
Gold Fish
Beginning Preschool
For the beginner who has reservations in and around the water. Focus will be on underwater exploration, supported front and back float, glides, face submerging, and rhythmic breathing techniques using fun and games.
Blue Gill
Intermediate Preschool or passed Gold Fish
For the beginner who loves the water and is able to submerge their entire head without assistance. Focus will be on swimming independently on the front and back, kicking, and gliding while having fun and enjoying the water.
Flying Fish
Advanced Preschool or passed Blue Gill
Child must be able to swim 5-10 yards unassisted. Focus will be on proper body positioning, developing a combined front stroke, side breathing, backstroke refinement and an introduction to elementary backstroke.
TopSchool Age
6 years and older & have passed Kindergarten. Teacher to Student Ratio: 1 to 6
Trout
Level I Beginning
For the older beginner who has reservations in and around the water. Focus will be on water adjustment and enjoyment. Skills include underwater exploration, supported front and back glides; face submerging, and rhythmic breathing techniques using fun and games.
Bass
Level I Intermediate or passed Trout
Child must be able to go under water without assistance and swim 3-5 feet. Focus will be on floating on both the front and back, front crawl stroke, kicking, and introduction to back crawl stroke.
Snapper
Level I Advanced or passed Bass
Child must be able to swim 5-10 yards unassisted on front and back. Focus will be on proper body position, refinement of front crawl with side breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and introduction to breaststroke.
Salmon
Level II or passed Snapper
Child must be able to swim 15-25 yards without assistance. Focus will be on stroke improvement and endurance in front crawl and back crawl, continuous side breathing, breaststroke, and introduction to butterfly.
TopAqua athletes
3 years and older.
Pre-requisite: Pre-Swim Team. Level III-Level IV
Unleash your child's inner Michael Phelps. This pre-swim team program is the ideal way for your child to improve their swimming strokes, build strength and endurance while having fun. Emphasis will be on the performing the four competitive strokes (front crawl, back stroke, breast stroke, and butterfly) comfortably. Participants will learn the basics of competition and will prepare for two fun Participation Swim Meets vs. the YMCA Stingrays Pre-Swim Team.
Fee: $42 per session or $110 for all summer.
Waterdogs
Age 3-5 years
Passed Flying Fish and is ready to swim 25+ yards and for longer periods of time. Emphasis on coordinating strokes with side breathing, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly. 10:45 am, 12:10 pm only.
